1. Rest up
Oral surgery may not feel like a major procedure, but it can be taxing on your body. Allowing your body to rest and recover will help you heal quickly. Do your best to avoid high impact activities for about a week if you can, but especially after the first 24 hours post-op.
2. Cold compress
If you experience swelling or pain, a cold compress is your best friend. Ice your cheeks in ten-minute increments to help numb the pain and curb the swelling.
3. Take pain medication
Your dentist should give you a list of recommended over-the-counter pain medications or provide a prescription for medication that can help you manage the pain during recovery.
4. Eat soft foods
Crunchy, hard and spicy foods are only going to aggravate the surgery site, so stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, puddings, gelatin, and soups during your first few days after surgery.
5. Keep the surgery site clean
After oral surgery, you run the risk of developing an infection at the surgery site if bacteria or food particles enter the area. Don’t eat or drink immediately after your surgery, and avoid using straws to preserve the blood clot that is protecting the surgery site.
6. Rinse with warm salt water
You should carefully brush around the surgery site as you heal. You should also rinse your mouth with warm salt water 2-3 times a day to keep the site clean and free of infection.
