Does dental sedation have side effects?
All forms of dental sedation carry the potential for side effects, but they are typically mild and dissipate quickly. Nitrous oxide may occasionally induce mild nausea or transient dizziness. Oral conscious sedation can result in drowsiness and diminished coordination. While generally safe, IV sedation presents a slightly elevated risk of respiratory depression or allergic reactions. Prior to any treatment, we always conduct a thorough consultation to discuss potential side effects and ensure patient safety.
Can I drive myself home after receiving dental sedation?
Driving is strictly prohibited following oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. These options significantly impair cognitive function and reflexes, rendering driving hazardous. Patients undergoing these procedures must arrange for a responsible friend or family member to provide transportation home. Patients are allowed to drive after receiving nitrous oxide, but we always recommend waiting until you feel completely back to normal before getting behind the wheel.
Can you still feel pain with dental sedation?
The objective of sedation is to minimize discomfort, not necessarily eliminate all sensation. With nitrous oxide, patients may perceive pressure, although anxiety is reduced and pain perception is dulled. Oral conscious sedation markedly diminishes pain perception, often resulting in limited procedural recall. IV sedation provides the deepest level of relaxation, frequently resulting in minimal to no pain being felt or remembered. Local anesthetic is routinely administered in conjunction with all sedation techniques to further ensure patient comfort.
